STEAM Teaching and Learning Tool

The Ultimate

Cardboard Construction STEAM

Teaching and Learning Tool

Makedo is for all students

Use Makedo with ALL students from preschool to college! Makedo caters to students with skill levels from beginner to expert, as well as students with varying interests; from mythical worlds to real world problems, from costumes and forts to the big bang.

Makedo facilitates active and intentional teaching:

Makedo enables teachers to intentionally create engaging environments to inspire, collaborate with and guide individuals or groups of students towards learning and development experiences in a meaningful way, whatever the focus; be it science, technology, engineering, arts, maths, team work, fine motor skills or anything else.

Makedo constructions can happen in any learning environment:

Use Makedo in any learning environment! Classrooms, maker spaces, libraries, after-hours and holiday programs, summer camps, scouting groups, innovation labs and anywhere else that there are learners!

Makedo is great for individual or collaborative work:

With Makedo, you can facilitate individual learning challenges, work in groups within a classroom, as an entire class or year level or invite the entire school community for a huge cardboard construction making event. Makedo fosters teamwork and collaboration skills by facilitating experiences where students naturally come together to create and construct.

Makedo is scalable:

Makedo creations can be any size, from a flower to a fort, a mask to a maze and so creations can take place anywhere, from a desk to an oval.

Makedo caters to differentiated learning:

Each student’s learning process differs. Makedo offers opportunities for educators to support students and tailor experiences considering students’ interests, strengths, capacities, skill level and goals.

Makedo fosters a love of learning:

Makedo enhances the learning process and students’ long-term love of learning because working with Makedo is highly engaging and super exciting to use.

Makedo facilitates learning by doing:

With Makedo, students can explore their ideas and hypotheses in a hands on way that engenders a deeper understanding of concepts with application to real-life scenarios.

Makedo is the ultimate open-ended construction system:

Makedo is open-ended because it facilitates the making of anything imaginable! With some readily available cardboard materials and some creative thinking, Makedo brings ideas to life.

Makedo emphasises process over outcome:

The Makedo experience celebrates the process of wondering, imagining, creating, discovering, experimenting, failing, thinking and solving. With Makedo, the emphasis is on process rather than outcome. What could be seen as a mistake becomes a discovery and cause for celebration.

Makedo develops imagination:

The Makedo experience sparks and develops imagination because with Makedo, ordinary cardboard becomes that imagined thing; from 'mind’s eye' to 'I made it'. Then Makedo constructions can be used for play, where the maker is protagonist in a hack-able world of their own creation; once you’ve made your rocketship you can fly to the moon.

How To Use Makedo In Your Classroom

Watch the ‘how to’ tutorials

To fine tune your cardboard construction skills, watch our ‘how to’ tutorials.
Later, you can share them with your students.

Have a go yourself

Before introducing Makedo to your students, it’s beneficial to have a go yourself. Using Makedo is easy!
Find some clean, used cardboard, grab your Makedo tools and start constructing.
You can’t go wrong! Through trialling and possibly failing, you’ll soon get the hang of how best to connect and build with cardboard.

Get started with your students

Facilitate an open-ended making session for your students so that they can get the hang of cardboard construction using the Makedo tools.
Start constructing something fun and of interest. For example, run a competition to see who can build the tallest tower, have the children dress each other up or create a creature that flies.
When your students are familiar with how to use the Makedo tools, leave the tools out and readily accessible as part of your classroom resources. This way, students can explore and represent their ideas and learning using Makedo, whenever they want to.

Plan a lesson or project

Now you’re ready to use Makedo to plan meaningful learning experiences for students.
The design and construction process is a fabulous way to explore students’ interests while meeting curriculum areas. E.g. learn about endangered animals and design a habitat or learn about simple machines and build traps!
Pose a statement or a question and set the challenge for students to come up with answers. Makedo cardboard constructions are a great way for students to represent what they have learned about a topic.

For inspiration on how to incorporate Makedo into your classroom, check out the ‘Classroom Snapshots’ on our Workshop HUB.

Cardboard As A Building Block

Part of the brilliance of working with Makedo is the magic of transforming an everyday cardboard box into whatever can be imagined; from mind’s eye to I made it! Children are natural makers and understand the fascination of transforming the simple building block of cardboard.
There is a lot going for cardboard!

Cardboard:

● Gives form and is pliable enough for small hands to manipulate.

● Is versatile and can be folded, sawed and hole punched while maintaining its durability.

● Is a readily available, free and unlimited building block that can be recycled and reused.

● Is a fabulous resource for modest classroom budgets because it is free!

● Facilitates the interruption of the waste stream by using otherwise discarded cardboard boxes for making.

● Can be reused over and over again. You can easily un-make a creation, re-make it or make something entirely new, all with the same bits of cardboard.

Sourcing Cardboard

In the spirit of making do, it simply requires a little creativity to find the right quality and amount of cardboard for your needs.

Here are a few ideas:

Ask families to donate recycled boxes from home or from their workplace.

● Ask school employees to save boxes from school deliveries and to donate recycled boxes from home.

● Go to your local supermarkets, wholesalers and retail businesses on the days they put their boxes out for recycling and freely take your fill.

● Get to know the businesses in your area and ask them to save their boxes for you.

● Find your local recycling depot and collect what you need from there.

Makedo and STEAM

Join the STEAM revolution with Makedo!

Support your students to build key 21st century thinking skills by facilitating Makedo experiences. With the increasing number of real-world problems facing our species and our planet, today’s students need to develop skills to question, analyse, reason, evaluate, collaborate and problem solve. Equip students to make a positive difference in the world by tackling global problems with innovative solutions.

An interdisciplinary / STEAM approach to learning fosters these skills and Makedo is the perfect STEAM teaching and learning tool. Educators of all subjects can use Makedo to enhance learning experiences from an open-ended exploration to a more formal curriculum inquiry or specialist program.

Makedo and the Maker Movement

The Maker Movement is a well established, fast-growing, global community of DIYers, tinkerers and hackers whose philosophy is closely related to STEAM learning. The Maker Movement is firmly set in education and is all about hands-on, collaborative, problem-based and project-based learning experiences to solve real-world problems.

Makedo is well loved in the Maker Movement because Makedo facilitates collaboration and together, anything is possible! Together, we can explore ways to navigate the turbulence of our times and work towards a more honest, sharing and constructive world. Help solve the future with Makedo by imagining and exploring what’s possible rather than what already exists.

Makedo also supports other core Maker Movement ideals because Makedo facilitates the free flow of ideas, the learner-driven experience, interdisciplinary learning and the idea of “failing forward”, where mistakes are valued as a necessary part of the learning process and ultimately contribute to the success of a project.

In true Maker Movement style, additional Makedo tools can be 3D printed to enhance, accessorise and hack the making process, like our angle brackets and free-swinging hinge used for kinetic action to make doors, windows, trap doors, drawbridge… the list goes on.

Enhance, accessorise and hack your Makedo making with 3D printed and laser-cut parts.
